She could hear the sobbing before she even opened the door. The room was empty, other than Bryan, who was on his bunk with head buried in his pillow, bawling his eyes out. Maia sat down next to him, and rubbed his back soothingly. “Hey, Bry,” she whispered, leaning down toward him. “What’s wrong?” She pulled on his arm, tugging him reluctantly away from his pillow. “Come here. Do I need to kick someone’s ass?”
Bryan had pretty much cleared the room when he’d come in upset and crying; most of the others not even caring, just clearing out when they saw him come in. He had curled up on his bunk, holding onto his pillow and just hiding his face as he bawled. How could he be so stupid? He wasn’t sure how long he’d laid there crying when suddenly the bed dipped and he felt a hand rubbing his back. Maia. He hiccuped and sniffled, peeking up from the pillow to look at his best friend, more grateful than anything for her being there. When she tugged on his arm, he was slightly reluctant, but then let go of the pillow and curled up against her side. “… Why do I still love him?” He managed out in a tiny voice, “Why can’t I just be happy that he’s happy, and not feel like my hearts broken every time that I see them?”
