The day had been long and difficult for Bryan. He’d submitted three articles that morning, only to have two denied. He’d gone to get a coffee and a cupcake to cheer himself up, and had ended up spilling the coffee and dropping the cupcake. Then he’d planned on going to dinner again with the man he’d been seeing from Tinder… only to sit for two hours and never have the man show up, and text him after yet another hour that ‘something had come up’ as it always seemed to. Which, altogether, made the day something he was glad was over.
He’d returned to the apartment after the dinner, but had decided not to stay in. Climbing out the window and leaving it ajar, he’d headed up the fire escape, to the roof, forgoing bringing a blanket or anything else with him. Instead, he laid back on the concrete, staring up at the sky and trying to spot any stars that the city lights didn’t block out. It was one of those nights where he missed home so much, missed his parents so much, and the ache in his chest was worse.
“You okay?”
He hadn’t heard anything, but Octavia had gotten great with not making any noise on the fire escape; probably due to her sneaking out far more than he did. Her voice didn’t startle him though; he’d figured that once she, Harper, or Monroe saw that he wasn’t in the apartment, one of them would come looking for him, and he tended to escape up to the roof. Lifting his head up off the ground, he tried to offer her a faint smile.
She had a couple blankets and pillows in her hands, and he couldn’t help the watery chuckle that escaped him. “I am now,” He stated softly, sitting up and reaching out to help her spread the blanket out on the ground and set the pillows out, before they laid back down, curled up together as Bryan reached out to play with Octavia’s hair in an absent gesture. “Thank you,” He added out softly then, “I needed the company.”
Later he’d explain to her what had happened that day and why he felt ready to cry. But for now? For now, laying with one of his very best friends and nudging each other to point out stars and count the airplanes that went over them was exactly what he needed.
