Murphy couldn’t help but roll his eyes. He had no idea if this kid
really didn’t know what he was talking about, or he was just playing
dumb. “We’re not really alive, but we’re not really dead,” he said,
watching him. “We’re inbetween until we turn eighteen.” His dad had told
him about a cat once, and some kind of scientist who had tried to make a
point about a box. Thinking about his dad hurt, though, so Murphy
pushed the memory away, studying the boy.

He
didn’t look like he belonged here. He was too…clean cut. Not one of
the elite, but not someone who was used to toiling away. Scraping by.
“So what’d they get you for?” Murphy asked, because that was the
question you were supposed to ask any newcomer. What did you do? Is it enough to get you floated when you turn eighteen? Was it an accident?

It
was a way to spend the time, at least. Plus, Murphy liked seeing the
look on the kids’ faces when he told them what he’d done to land himself
in the Sky Box.

Bryan was quiet for a long moment, but blinked, it finally seeming to click in his head what the other meant. “Oh,” He stated then, “That makes sense. You’re right. Sorry.” He offered the other a soft, sheepish smile in apology for having not understood at first. His mind was still reeling from being in there, let alone trying to process anything else.

Then the other asked the question, and Bryan’s face turned a bright red. “So, uh…” He reached up, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, “I live in Farm Station. My parents work there. I was helping out and was asked to go grab some supplies. I put a few seeds that I was holding in my pocket for the moment and went to go do what I was asked.” It sounded stupid as he said it, and he cringed a little, knowing he was going to get made fun of.

“I forgot they were in there,” He continued, “Until I was sitting in the lunch room and put my hands in my pockets and pull them out and said, ‘oh thats where those went’, and the guard grabbed me.” He offered a sheepish look, then asked, “So, uh, what about you?”

I apologize for being absent the past week; family came to stay and I got sick, so today has been the first day I’ve even been well enough to sit up at the computer. I’m going to try and catch up this week, so I apologize and hope you all still want to write with me! ❤
